Abhilash, Phoebe, Michael, Sylvain and Michael are just a few of our engineers from around the world. In honor of Engineers Week, we reached out to them about all things engineering. From less than a year to over 10 years at Radiall, these engineers have learned a lot during their time here.

What made you decide to pursue engineering?

Abhilash: As a kid, I always wondered how things work. Growing up, I realized it all comes down to science and engineering. My fascination with these kinds of things made me pursue engineering.

Phoebe: When I was little, I was always amazed by how things were made and how they worked. The first quarter of college, I majored in Applied Physics in Hong Kong. I came to the US right after that and began studying computer programming. Unfortunately, the program was cancelled after one year. With the language barrier as a new immigrant, I thought it would be best for me to choose engineering, something similar to physics. Since then, I have been enjoying every single bit of the engineering life.

Michael: I've always had a fascination with how things worked, how they went together. I also always loved airplanes, so working in the aerospace industry is a dream come true.

Sylvain: I wanted to develop new technologies and create a product that does not yet exist but will become fundamental.

Is there a particular project you have worked on that you are most proud of?

Laurence: Developing the F-Light with a Japanese company was very fulfilling.

Phoebe: There was a project where I had to design and support manufacturing to build very thin, short and flexible semi-rigid cable assemblies. I was not confident that we could achieve all the deliverables because I didn't have much experience creating 3D models of these cable assemblies. In the end, with all the support from the various teams, we did it. I learned so much from everyone and gained so much experience from this project. Most importantly, I learned that when working as a team, we can accomplish what seems impossible.

Michael: I am proud of the final destinations of the various cable assemblies I've worked on, everywhere from military systems to in-flight entertainment systems. It's amazing when you realize that you and your team had a small part in the realization of an airliner.

What advice do you have for someone pursuing a career in engineering?

Sylvain: Engineering is an excellent career choice. There are opportunities in different fields, such as medical, energy, space and more.

Laurence: Stay in a technical position for a while before moving to a management role, in order to build a strong professional basis.

Abhilash: First, love what you do. Learning comes second. Engineering always brings you challenges in terms of life, technology or markets. Engineers (or those who want to pursue engineering) should always be optimistic when facing such challenges. You are able to make the world very amazing.

Phoebe: Engineering is not always about math or science. They are only the tools that help solve problems. Engineering is a mindset; it's about many ways to solve one problem. That's what all the fun is about. Always have an open mind and believe that the more you do, the more you learn.

Michael: Never stop learning. And learn in every subject you can. Make yourself versatile. That's what I love about working at Radiall. Every day I get to do something different and learn something new.
