Quantum computers use the power of quantum mechanics to make a huge jump forward in technological advancements. Let’s take a look at what quantum computers are and how they can be used now and in the future. 

What is Quantum Computing?

A traditional computer uses bits with the value of 0 or 1. A quantum computer uses quantum bits, or qubits, which can be either 0 or 1 or a superposition of the two. Bits in a traditional computer and qubits in a quantum computer play a similar role but act in very different ways. 

Think of the difference between the computer you are on and a quantum computer this way. First, we had the candle. It provided light so people could do things after dark. Then, we had an incandescent light bulb. This was a technological revolution that allowed us to have even more light after dark. A quantum computer is a technological revolution from the traditional computer. 

In quantum computing, qubits can allow you to find a solution to a problem much faster. If your computer is looking for a solution in a large book, it is looking through one page at a time. If you were to look for a solution using a quantum computer, the quantum computer can look at all the pages at the same time, leading you to that solution much more quickly. 

Applications of Quantum Computing

This technology can rapidly explore an enormous set of possibilities, boosting the speed and accuracy of engineering developments. Quantum physics can be applied in many ways across a variety of industries like cybersecurity, medication development, clean energy and artificial intelligence. Quantum computers are already being used in the fields of communication and cryptography.
