SMPM CONNECTORS BENEFIT FROM NEW PEEK™ INSULATOR
New PEEK™ molded insulator for higher center contact captivation and retention force
SMPM snap-on connector series has features and applications similar to its cousin SMP series, which is 30% bigger in size. Yet the very small size of SMPM interface makes it challenging to obtain good center contact captivation and retention using the traditional PTFE machined insulators.
Radiall is proud to announce a new ultra-miniature PEEK™ molded insulator, which has been implemented on most SMPM cable and receptacle connectors. This innovative insulator is less than 2mm (.08 in) in diameter. Its shape has been optimized using advanced simulation software to provide excellent RF performances up to 65 GHz.
PEEK™ is a polymer thermoplastic with outstanding mechanical and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperature. Because of its robustness, PEEK™ is used to make items used in demanding applications.
Radiall SMPM connectors using PEEK™ insulator are less subject to mechanical stress and overheating during soldering assembly process. Center contact captivation and retention is higher than with traditional machined PTFE insulators.
The SMPM product range includes plugs for .047 and .085 semi-rigid cable, PCB and panel receptacles, hermetic receptacles with integrated glass bead, fixed and spring-loaded adapters. Extraction tools are also available to disconnect right-angle plugs or adapters.
PEEK™ is a trademark of Victrex plc.
Product characteristics
Radiall SMPM connectors meet and exceed the MIL-STD-348 standard.
- Impedance: 50 Ω
- Frequency range: 0 - 65 GHz
- Available in smooth bore or full detent interface
- Can accommodate 0.25mm (.01 in) radial and axial misalignment with minor electrical performance variation
- Allow center-to-center PCB spacing of 3.3 mm (0.13 in)
- Connector body made of CuBe2 or stainless steel
SMPM connectors are so small it is very difficult to differentiate smooth bore from full detent interface. But with Radiall SMPM, this is no more a problem. All full detent SMPM connector bodies are marked with a groove for easy identification.
Applications
The connectors are designed for rugged environments. They are typically used in military applications such as airborne radars or active antenna systems. Their small size and high operating frequency are the main advantages of SMPM versus other similar push-on or blind mate series.
SMPM is also a popular connector interface in telecommunications where it is used to drive or modulate optical signals at very high bit rate in optoelectronic modules.
